AYA SOUNDS · BUYING GUIDE
Choosing your first handpan
Your first handpan should make you want to sit down and play. Start with the sound, then compare the notes, layout and full cost. This guide uses instruments and recordings from the AYA Sounds collection to help you make that choice.
A good place to start
- Listen to several scales before choosing by a name or a photograph.
- Choose a note layout you want to explore; more notes are an option, not a requirement.
- Confirm the exact instrument, price, production time and delivery before ordering.
Choose the sound first
A handpan scale gives you a particular set of notes. Those notes shape the melodies and harmonies you can explore. A scale name is a useful starting point, but the actual note list matters: two instruments with the same scale name can have different ranges and extra notes.
Listen to a few recordings without watching the performance. Notice which sound you want to return to. Then check the layout and try an instrument in person when possible. You do not need to choose the largest range to begin making music.
Compare three starting points
These are different musical options, not a ranking. Open each instrument to see its actual notes, versions and price.
D Kurd
D Kurd offers a minor-coloured starting point. The current 10-note version includes B♭3, giving you a different set of melodic choices from D Celtic Minor.

D Celtic Minor (Amara)
D Celtic Minor (Amara) also centres on D. Its current 10-note layout leaves out B♭3 and includes D5. Compare the note lists and listen for the difference.

F2 Low Pygmy
F2 Low Pygmy has a deeper F2 central note. Compare the 9- and 15-note options if a low, spacious sound draws you in; use headphones or speakers that reproduce bass clearly.

In our listings, the total note count includes the central note, called the ding, and any bottom notes. Check the top and bottom lists separately so you know where each note sits.
A smaller layout can leave plenty of room for rhythm, phrasing and variation. Extra notes can extend your range, but bottom notes require a different reach and playing approach. Choose them because you want those pitches, rather than simply because a higher count looks better.
What to listen for in a recording
Use the same headphones and a comfortable, similar volume when comparing instruments. Listen for:
- The character of the central note and whether you enjoy its depth.
- Individual notes played slowly, as well as a full melody.
- How the notes blend when played together.
- A playing style and register that suit the music you want to make.
Recording equipment, room acoustics and processing affect what you hear. A demonstration is a useful reference, not a promise that every version sounds identical. Ask us about a recording of the instrument or configuration you are considering.

The current AYA Sounds collection ranges from € 1,550 to € 3,200. Use the price beside your chosen note configuration; the central ding is included. The catalogue updates these prices as the collection changes.
Bags and cases are optional and priced separately. Confirm shipping and the total amount with us before ordering. When comparing value, consider the sound, usable note range, construction and aftercare alongside the price.
